Description
Richly Decorated Hunting Spear (Boar Spear), Austria, 16th–19th Century. An exceptionally ornate Austrian hunting spear head (Saufeder), elaborately decorated with gilt and blackened steel, most likely produced in a noble armoury between the 16th and 19th centuries. The broad double-edged blade is finely chiseled with foliate ornament and enriched with fire-gilded details in high relief, centering on an oval medallion engraved with a heraldic letter “B” on one side and a mythological phoenix on the other — a likely reference to the weapon’s noble owner or family crest. Below the blade, two finely sculpted boar heads form decorative side guards. The socket and shaft are intricately adorned with pierced and gilt panels featuring hunting trophies, crossed weapons, and scrolling Renaissance motifs, all executed with exceptional precision and contrast. This spear exemplifies the artistry of Austrian and South German hunting weapons, which served both as functional arms for boar hunting and as highly symbolic courtly displays of status, power, and refined taste. A rare and spectacular piece of ceremonial hunting art — combining martial symbolism, technical mastery, and Renaissance-inspired opulence.Condition: Excellent preserved condition, minor age patina, gilding and details exceptionally crisp and intact. Length: approx. 31 cm.
