Description
Superb Quality, Gold-Damascened Small Sword, France, circa 1740–1760. An exceptionally fine and elegant French small sword, richly damascened in gold and blackened steel, dating from the mid-18th century. The hilt features a double shell guard, knuckle bow, quillons, and ovoid pommel, all beautifully ornamented with intricate gold damascenes of scrollwork, trophies of arms, and classical motifs on a blued steel ground. The grip is bound with fine twisted silver wire. The oval pommel bears finely engraved and gilt decorations with acanthus scrolls and floral motifs. The blade, of colichemarde form, is bright finish. This type of luxurious small sword was worn by noble officers and courtiers as a mark of status and refinement, combining superb craftsmanship with martial elegance. A magnificent example of French decorative arms from the Age of Enlightenment. Excellent condition. Length: approximately 98 cm.
