Description

Model 1843 Prussian Cuirassier Helmet (Metal Pickelhaube for Enlisted Men), Kingdom of Prussia, circa 1843 - 1860. A splendid and early example of the Model 1843 Cuirassier enlisted helmet, one of the first all-metal helmets adopted by the Prussian heavy cavalry. This impressive piece features a tall, polished steel skull with stepped front visor and a graceful rear neck guard, all bordered with brass trim and large domed rivets. The helmet is crowned by a steel spike mounted on a ventilated brass base plate, characteristic of the earliest cuirassier models. The front bears the large brass Prussian eagle wappen, inscribed “Mit Gott fur Konig und Vaterland” (“With God for King and Fatherland”), centered with the crowned cipher “FR” for Friedrich Rex. The brass scaled chinstrap and side rosettes remain present, showing honest wear and a beautiful patina. The interior retains its original leather liner. The 1843 cuirassier helmet represents the direct forerunner of the famous Pickelhaube. Introduced under King Friedrich Wilhelm IV, it was worn by Prussia’s elite heavy cavalry regiments until replaced by later spiked models in the 1860s. Early examples such as this one are rare survivors and highly sought after by collectors and institutions alike. Condition: Good. Dimensions: Height (to spike) approx. 28 cm.
