Description
Rare Large Two-Handed Sword, Southern Germany, circa 1550–1580. A imposing German two-handed sword (Zweihander), dating to the 16th century. The straight double-edged blade with a flattened diamond cross-section. The ricasso is fitted with side lugs (parierhaken) for defensive parrying. The massive quillons are deeply curved and fitted with small finials, typical of South-German or Swiss workshops of the mid–16th century. A prominent side rings is mounted at the root of the blade to protect the hand. The long grip, made for both hands, oval section, tapering towards a finely shaped spherical pommel with raised collar. These impressive swords were symbols of martial prowess and elite rank within Renaissance mercenary formations, famously used by the Doppelsoldner (“double-pay men”), who fought in the front lines with unmatched skill and bravery. Condition: Very good for its age, with honest wear, stable patina, and minor pitting consistent with age and use. Length: 188 cm. Guard width: 48 cm.
