Description

Japanese Samurai Armor Set in Lacquered Storage Box (Yoroi), Showa Period. A fine and complete Japanese samurai armor set (Yoroi), housed in its traditional black lacquered storage box (gusoku bitsu), richly decorated with gilt floral mon (family crests) in maki-e lacquer. The set includes a full suit of ceremonial armor, kabuto helmet with large gilt maedate crest, fierce menpo face mask with white moustache, sode shoulder guards, kote arm guards, haidate thigh protection, and suneate shin guards. This armor was made in the traditional style by a Japanese master craftsman, as indicated by the accompanying wooden plaque bearing the maker’s inscription and seal. The set was likely produced in the mid-20th century (Showa period) for display during Gogatsu no Sekku (Boys’ Festival), when miniature samurai armors symbolized strength, bravery, and the spirit of the warrior. The lacquered box, decorated with gold chrysanthemums and plum blossoms, doubles as a display base, in keeping with traditional presentation customs. The interior retains its silk brocade cloth and original instruction card from the Japan Doll Association, attesting to its authenticity and quality craftsmanship. A striking and beautifully detailed example of Japanese ceremonial samurai armor — an impressive display piece reflecting centuries of warrior tradition and refined decorative art. Condition: Excellent preserved condition with minor age wear; complete with all components and accessories. Box dimensions: approx. 38 × 29 × 27 cm.
