Description

Extremely Rare Belt Buckle Pistol, “CONNELL, 83 CHEAPSIDE, LONDON” England, 19th Century. A remarkable and extremely rare 19th-century English belt buckle incorporating a miniature single-shot percussion pistol mechanism. The brass lockplate is clearly stamped “CONNELL, 83 CHEAPSIDE, LONDON”, indicating manufacture or retail by the London gunmaker or outfitter Connell, active in the Victorian era. The small smooth-bore barrel projects from a rectangular iron backing plate, with a simple striker-type hammer and trigger arrangement. The mechanism is cleverly integrated into the form of a functional belt buckle, complete with its original leather strap. Concealed weapons of this kind were designed either for close-range personal defense or as curiosities and novelties for wealthy gentlemen interested in mechanical ingenuity. This highly uncommon survival illustrates the fascination of the Victorian period with engineering innovation and concealment weapons. An excellent collector’s item for connoisseurs of antique firearms, curiosities, and British craftsmanship. Condition: The piece retains its original components with rich patina throughout. Dimensions: buckle approx. 13 x 7 cm.
