Description
Extra Rare Flintlock Hand Mortar, likely German, 18th Century. A rare and impressive flintlock hand bombard (hand mortar) dating to the 18th century, featuring a massive brass barrel and richly ornamented furniture. The piece combines both functional and decorative qualities. The Bronze barrel (caliber approx. 52 mm), mounted to a walnut stock with engraved brass mounts. The lockplate and frizzen are delicately engraved with scroll motifs, while the pommel cap bears a fine depiction of a grotesque mask or lion’s head surrounded by foliate engraving. The trigger guard and sideplate are of brass, finely chased in Rococo style. These hand mortars were intended for firing explosive at short range and were used in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. A very rare and visually striking example of early flintlock artillery technology in pistol form, preserved in fine display condition. Length: approx. 41 cm.
