Description

Exceptional Prehistoric Archaeological Collection from the Estate of Emile Riviere (1835–1922). A rare and important collection of approximately 100 prehistoric artifacts, including flint arrowheads, hand axes, scrapers and ceramic vessels. The items span a wide prehistoric chronology—from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic period—dating approximately from 40,000 to 5,000 BCE. Many tools are expertly knapped, and several pieces retain original 19th-century handwritten cataloging labels. This collection originates from the private holdings of Émile Rivière (1835–1922), a pioneering French anthropologist and archaeologist renowned for his contributions to prehistoric cave exploration in France. Rivière’s work helped establish prehistoric anthropology as a scientific discipline. The bulk of his discoveries are now preserved in the collections of the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris. This exceptional ensemble offers collectors, museums, and institutions a unique opportunity to acquire artifacts personally handled and cataloged by one of the founding figures of French prehistoric archaeology. Provenance: From the family descendants of Emile Riviere.
