Description

Bavarian Cuirassier Helmet, Model 1842 (Ludwig I Period, ca. 1842 - 1848). A fine and scarce example of the Bavarian heavy-cavalry helmet introduced in 1842 for cuirassier regiments serving under King Ludwig I of Bavaria. Constructed of bright polished steel with brass fittings, this model reflects the transitional neoclassical design of mid-19th-century German heavy-cavalry headgear. Tall steel skull with gilt-brass comb and crest, surmounted by the royal Bavarian crowned cipher “L” (for Ludwig), finely chased and mounted to the front. The black horsehair mane runs along the crest’s upper ridge. Brass lion-mask bosses retain the scaled chin-chains; the left boss bears the Bavarian cockade. Brim edged in brass, the underside of the front visor painted dark green. Interior lined in leather. Stamped on the shell with various issue marks: “245 I C R / 31 1871” (indicating later regimental reissue after unification), plus additional assembly numbers “614” and “735.” Condition: Very good for its age; light surface oxidation, wear to the leather lining, brass mounts with warm patina; overall a well-preserved and fully original example. Dimensions: approx. 32 cm high.
