Description

Ancient Greek Black-Figure Oinochoe, Attic, 6th Century BCE. A remarkable example of early Attic black-figure pottery, this oinochoe (wine jug) features a finely executed mythological combat scene rendered in lustrous black slip against a terracotta ground. The bulbous body tapers into a trefoil mouth and is accented with a single high-arching handle. The decoration showcases a dynamic depiction of a nude Greek warrior wielding a club—possibly Heracles—engaged in battle with a centaur, surrounded by a frieze of palmettes and scrolling motifs. Traces of added red and white pigments accentuate the figures, particularly the warrior's crown and the centaur's garment. The imagery is filled with motion, anatomical detailing, and tension, capturing the spirit of early narrative vase painting. The surface bears archaeological patina, with some wear and minor abrasions consistent with its age. Provenance: From an old European collection, acquired before 1970. A rare and highly decorative piece, illustrating the mythological themes and artistic skill of archaic Athens. Ideal for collectors of classical antiquities or museum-quality ceramics. Height 34 cm.
