Description
A rare forged steel shield of the rondache type, Italy, probably Milan, first half of the 17th century. The shield's surface is richly decorated with chasing and engraving; the floral ornament is intertwined with images of knights and trophies, and the round medallions contain portraits of kings. The central part of the shield depicts a double-headed eagle, the symbol of the Holy Roman Empire. The border is worked with a hatched oblique pattern. The domed front is punctuated with protruding rivets, and the reverse has a grip. A wonderful collectible shield in good condition. Minor damage, see photos. Diameter 49 cm.
