Description

Short sword "Glaive" M 1794 for graduates of the "Ecole de Mars", France 1794. Designed by the famous painter Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825). A design much like the classicalist style of the Roman sword (Gladius). Only 3500 were ever produced between June 1st and the end of September 1794. Straight double-edged blade. Scaled brass hilt, plain cross guard, two steel quillions with brass olive shaped ends and a steel knuclebow. A revolutionary Phrygian cap on the langet. Original brass mounted wooden scabbard with felt cloth inserts. Magnificent French, collectible sword in excellent condition. length 68 cm.
