Description
Russian Silver and Niello-Decorated Cane Handle, Caucasus, Late 19th Century. A fine antique walking cane featuring a silver handle richly decorated with niello ornamentation and a dark wooden shaft. The curved handle displays intricate floral and geometric scrollwork, typical of the Caucasian silversmithing tradition, and bears an engraved monogram along with the inscription “Caucasus”. The silver is stamped with Imperial Russian hallmarks, including “84” zolotnik purity mark (indicating .875 silver) and an assayer’s mark, consistent with regional workshops active in the late 19th century. The craftsmanship reflects the characteristic niello technique—a black enamel-like mixture fused into engraved silver patterns, widely used in the Dagestan and Tiflis regions. The piece combines elegance and cultural symbolism, serving both as a luxury accessory and an example of Caucasian artistry under the Russian Empire. A refined and collectible example of Imperial Russian decorative art from the Caucasus region. Length: approx. 82 cm. Condition: Very good, with light age wear, minor surface scratches, and original patina.
