Description

Rare Watercolor Portrait - Mother and Son in Traditional Folk Costume, Hungary, Poland or Ukraine, 1908. A charming and historically significant watercolor on paper depicting a mother and son in traditional Eastern European folk costumes. The composition shows a woman wearing an elaborate embroidered bodice in green with floral motifs, a decorative red and yellow headscarf, and traditional white sleeves. Beside her sits a son in white clothing, holding an headdress in his hands. The artist's signature in the lower right corner is "PM". The painting demonstrates skilled technique in watercolor medium, with delicate attention to the intricate details of the traditional costume elements - particularly the embroidered bodice, ornate headwear. The soft, muted palette and careful rendering suggest the work of an accomplished artist familiar with regional costume traditions. The painting is bordered in a gold inner frame and mounted on mat board. A handwritten dedication on the reverse of the original backing reads: “To my dear cousin Eugenia, in memory of the occasion, September 30, 1908. Blanche M...” (partially illegible). This rare and atmospheric piece is a valuable artifact of ethnographic and artistic interest, bridging generations of personal and cultural history. Minor damage, see photos. Overall size 21x16 cm.
