Description

Rare Luristan spike-butted ax head, Middle East, 1200 BC-1000 BC. Copper alloy axe-head with quadruple-spiked butt; shaft-hole; blade edge almost at 90 degrees to shaft-hole, implying a heavily curved haft; blade decorated with an arrow-like pattern cast in low relief. The blade begins with a narrow shaft and then broadens into a slightly convex edge. The upper and lower edges are strengthened by thickening. Spike-butted axes are hallmarks of Luristan’s bronze industry in Iron Age I (c.1200-1000 BC) and this ax displays typical form and decoration from this period. Condition: Very good. Length: approx. 21 cm.
