Rare Austrian Girardoni Pneumatic, Air Rifle by Joseph Krug, Linz, Late 18th – Early 19th Century. An exceptional example of early pneumatic firearm innovation, this antique Austrian air rifle was crafted by renowned gunsmith Joseph Krug of Linz, who was active between 1792 and 1810 (reference: Stockel, p. 649). Intended for precision shooting, this rifle features a finely rifled barrel and is equipped with a diopter rear sight for superior accuracy. It was designed for use in both military and civilian contexts including hunting and African expeditions, where its silent discharge, lack of smoke, and independence from gunpowder were crucial tactical advantages. Maker's inscription engraved on the barrel: "Jo. Krug, in Linz." The rifle loads from the breech and includes its original hand-crank air pump key, a highly sought-after and seldom-preserved accessory. The air reservoir is ingeniously integrated into the buttstock, which also features delicate engraved brass fittings and decorative carving. This rare and historically significant Girardoni air rifle is a prized example of 18th-century arms engineering and would be a cornerstone piece for any advanced antique arms collection.
