Description
Original WWII German Luftwaffe Officer's Dress Dagger (2nd Model), circa 1937–1945. A regulation Luftwaffe officer’s dagger, second pattern (Luftwaffendolch, 2. Modell), complete with its original scabbard, silver bullion portepee, and hangars (suspension straps). The hilt features an ivory-colored celluloid grip with spiral grooves, bound by twisted wire. The crossguard depicts the Luftwaffe eagle with outstretched wings, finely cast and detailed, clutching a swastika (the national emblem used at the time). The pommel bears the same emblem within oak-leaf borders, with a matte finish. The blade is bright and double-edged, remains well-preserved, showing minor oxidation typical of age. The scabbard, of alloy, retains its mounts and two suspension rings, decorated with oak-leaf reliefs. The hangers are of woven fabric with silver/aluminum bullion stripes on a dark background, backed with velvet, fitted with decorative oak-leaf buckles and clips stamped D.R.G.M. (Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster - registered design). The lanyard is damaged, see photo. This pattern was introduced in 1937 to replace the heavier first model and remained the standard ceremonial weapon for Luftwaffe officers throughout the Second World War. The present example retains all its period accessories and is a representative and complete example of the type. Dimensions: Total length: approx. 43 cm. Condition: Good. Suspension straps show moderate wear to velvet backing. The lanyard is damaged.
