Description
Napoleon I on horseback Etching by Jean Vyboud (1872-1944) after a detail from Ernest Meissonier's (1815-1891) painting "Campagne de France", Paris, 1908. A finely executed etching by French artist Jean Vyboud (1872–1944), created after a detail from the celebrated painting Campagne de France by Ernest Meissonier (1815–1891). The scene depicts Napoleon I on horseback, cloaked and pensive, presumably during the arduous French campaign of 1814. In the background, weary troops march through the cold landscape. The etching is pencil-signed by the artist in the lower right margin and includes a remarque in the form of an eagle, symbolizing the Napoleonic Empire. A rare and collectible piece for admirers of Napoleonic history, French military art, or 19th- to early 20th-century etchings. Good condition. Size 46x36 cm.
