Description

Magnificent, Large, Engraving, Triumphal Entry of Alexander into Babylon, beginning of the 18th century. Engraving by Pierre Picault (1680-1711) and Nicolas Henri Tardieu (1674-1749) after Charles Le Brun (1619-1690). Alexander the Great entered Babylon in 331 BC after defeating the Persian (Achaemenid) empire at the Battle of Gaugamela. He was met with a warm welcome and the city became a major administrative center for his expanding empire. He returned to Babylon in 323 BC, where he later died. A wonderful engraving for collectors and interior decoration. Overall size 47x60 cm.
