Description

History and Anecdotes of the Life, Reign, Dethronement and Death of Peter III - London, 1766, Mr. de la Marche. Leather, spine richly gilt in compartments with red label. A rare and politically charged contemporary account of the life, reign, deposition and death of Tsar Peter III of Russia, husband of Catherine the Great. Written in the form of letters and attributed to M. de la Marche, this work reflects the strong European curiosity about the 1762 coup that brought Catherine II to power. The narrative mixes eyewitness gossip and diplomatic rumor, offering one of the earliest printed portraits of Peter III as both reformer and tragic figure. The closing letter, dated Hambourg, 18 mars 1764, anchors the correspondence within two years of the Emperor’s death. Copies of this edition are scarce, particularly in original 18th-century binding. Condition: Good; binding tight, joints solid, spine and boards finely preserved with only minor age wear. Dimensions: approx. 17 x 11 cm.
