Description

Extra rare Islamic Persian, Kazakh, Uzbekistan manuscript of the Biographies of the Descendants of the Prophet Muhammad, 1777. Dated 1191 Hijri / 1777 CE on the colophon page. Language: Persian. Script: Primarily shikaste with elements of nastaliq, written by multiple hands. The text comprises nine distinct chapters. Original hardcover binding with leather overlay and embossed medallions, featuring a distinctive Islamic envelope-style flap closure (lisan). This rare and historically valuable Persian manuscript contains a biographical account of the family of the Prophet Muhammad. It traces the lineage and stories of the Prophet’s grandsons, Hasan and Husayn, and their descendants down to Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya. Beyond its religious content, this manuscript holds significant genealogical importance, particularly in Central Asian Islamic history. Of note is the reference to Muhammad al-Hanafiyya, regarded as the progenitor of many Sayyid lineages among Kazakhs and Turkestani peoples. This manuscript is a rare bibliographic artifact with great Islamic historical and cultural significance, reflecting not only religious devotion but also the transmission of genealogical heritage in the Persianate and Turkic Islamic worlds of the 18th century. The manuscript is preserved in a traditional Islamic binding with a leather flap cover, which not only protects the text block but also serves an aesthetic function. Good condition, minor edge wear and signs of use typical for age. Provenance: Acquired in Uzbekistan. Size 22x15x3 cm.
