Description

Caucasian Dagger "KAMA" with scabbard, Silver and Niello, Russian Empire, Probably Dagestan, c 1900. This exceptional Caucasian kindjal, commonly referred to as a kama, dates to approximately 1900 during the late Russian Imperial era and represents the distinguished martial traditions of the North Caucasus. Attributed to the master craftsmen of Dagestan, the dagger features a double-edged steel blade with characteristic deep fullers designed for optimal balance and structural integrity. The hilt is fitted with dark grip scales and silver-mounted rivets, while the pommel is encased in silver decorated with intricate niello foliate patterns. The accompanying scabbard consists of a leather-wrapped wooden core adorned with ornate silver decorated mounts. These silver elements are embellished with high-contrast niello etching and fine floral motifs, reflecting the sophisticated techniques prevalent in regional metalworking centers such as Kubachi. The weapon measures approximately 49 cm in total length, making it a substantial example of late 19th or early 20th-century Caucasian artistry. The item is in good condition.
