Description
Antique Marechaussee Troop Broadsword, Gilded and Blued, First Empire, France, circa 1805–1815. A fine and elegant French Marechaussee Troop Broadsword from the First Empire period. The straight, single-edged steel blade with a single fuller on each side features richly engraved and fire-gilded decorations with floral and martial motifs, including trophies of arms and foliage; traces of original blueing are still visible. The brass hilt comprises a guard with a flattened quillon and a prominent knuckle bow, connecting to a smooth brass pommel cap. The grip is finely wrapped with twisted silver wire over a wooden core. Complete with its original black leather scabbard fitted with brass mounts, including a suspension ring and chape. A representative example of French cavalry sword used by the Marechaussee during the Napoleonic Wars, combining both functionality and ceremonial refinement. Condition: Very good for the period; minor wear, light oxidation, and traces of gilding and blueing preserved. Length: 102 cm.
