Description

An Unique Italian Combined Cavalry Broadsword and Revolver, prototypes, Circa 1870. This exceptional mid-19th-century combination weapon represents a remarkable feat of Italian gunsmithing and bladesmithing, produced circa 1870. It is hypothesized that this unique exhibit is one of the prototypes that was not approved for serial production for the royal guard of Victor Emmanuel II. The design features a heavy cavalry broadsword blade with double fullers, expertly integrated with a 7.7 mm caliber revolver mechanism. The barrel, measuring 3.6 centimeters, is positioned alongside the ricasso, while the mechanical configuration utilizes a six-chambered cylinder mounted ahead of the guard. The hilt is constructed with a robust steel stirrup guard finished "in the white," which effectively encloses a discrete trigger mechanism. The handle is fitted with two-piece, contoured dark horn grips, elegantly secured by diamond-shaped metal escutcheons. This rare example of multi-functional military technology is accompanied by its original, matching steel scabbard with suspension rings. The piece measures approximately 120 centimeters in overall length. The item is in good condition.
