Description

An Ottoman Silver-Mounted Knife with Chased and Embossed Scabbard, 19th Century. This 19th-century Ottoman dagger is a example of silversmithing, featuring a straight, single-edged steel blade that is accented along the spine with decorative notches and geometric file-work near the forte. The hilt is carved from a single piece of dark, polished horn, exhibiting an elegant, minimalist form that is complemented by a gilded metal ferrule at the bolster. The weapon is housed in a silver scabbard, which serves as a canvas for masterful chased and embossed ornamentation; the central section is covered in dense floral scrolls and interlocking geometric cartouches, while the lower portion transitions into a rhythmic imbricated scale pattern. The scabbard terminates in a distinctive zoomorphic chape modeled as a mythical sea creature. Measuring approximately 46 centimeters in total length, this piece reflects the rich decorative vocabulary and martial traditions prevalent throughout the Ottoman Balkans and Anatolia during the late imperial period. The item is in good condition.
