Description

An Indian Bronze-Mounted Bhuj (Elephant Knife), Kutch Region, 19th Century. This impressive 19th-century Indian Bhuj, a distinctive weapon originating from the Kutch region of Gujarat, is often referred to as an "elephant knife". The weapon features a heavy, single-edged steel blade of recurved form that emerges from the jaws of a finely cast and chased bronze leopard head. The elongated cylindrical hilt is constructed of bronze, meticulously decorated with diagonal spiral fluting and segmented by raised bands, terminating in a secondary animal-headed pommel, likely representing a leopard. The Bhuj is complete with its original wooden scabbard, which is covered in a red velvet and further embellished with a chased metal fittings, both exhibiting intricate traditional foliate and floral scrolls in high relief. Measuring approximately 70 centimeters in total length, this piece serves as a remarkable example of Western Indian martial art and courtly status, combining the utility of a hacking weapon with the refined craftsmanship of regional metalwork. The item is in good condition.
