Description

A Zofingen Student Society Presentation Walking Cane, Swiss, Dated 1894. This distinguished late nineteenth-century Swiss presentation walking cane, dated 1894, is a fine example of commemorative gentlemanly accoutrements from the Belle Époque. The cane features a polished hardwood shaft terminating in an elegantly curved hook handle fashioned from dark bovine horn, which is inset at the terminal with a meticulously painted polychrome enamel plaque. This plaque displays a sophisticated heraldic achievement including a knight’s helmet surmounting a diagonal-banded shield, flanked by tricolor standards and set beneath the motto "Patrie, Amitié, Science"- is the motto of the Zofingen Student Society, a Swiss fraternity founded in 1819. The motto embodies the society's values: commitment to the homeland (Switzerland), maintaining bonds of friendship among members, and promoting studies and science. It is used by the various branches of the Zofingen Society throughout Switzerland, such as in Geneva, Neuchâtel, and Vaud. This motto appears on the publications, archives, and flags of this long-established student association, which recently celebrated its bicentenary. This phrase is the cornerstone of the Zofingen Society's identity, one of the oldest student associations in Switzerland. The inscription identifies the piece as a gift or honor for "Charles Colombas" dated "Noel 1894". Measuring approximately 89 cm in total length and finished with a dark tapered ferrule, the cane represents the intersection of Swiss academic prestige and the refined social customs of the fin de siècle. The item is in good condition.
