This distinguished late nineteenth-century Swiss presentation walking cane, dated 1894, is a fine example of commemorative gentlemanly accoutrements from the Belle Époque. The cane features a polished hardwood shaft terminating in an elegantly curved hook handle fashioned from dark bovine horn, which is inset at the terminal with a meticulously painted polychrome enamel plaque. This plaque displays a sophisticated heraldic achievement including a knight’s helmet surmounting a diagonal-banded shield, flanked by tricolor standards and set beneath the motto "Patrie, Amitié, Science"- is the motto of the Zofingen Student Society, a Swiss fraternity founded in 1819. The motto embodies the society's values: commitment to the homeland (Switzerland), maintaining bonds of friendship among members, and promoting studies and science. It is used by the various branches of the Zofingen Society throughout Switzerland, such as in Geneva, Neuchâtel, and Vaud.
