A Victorian Bowie Knife, Sheffield "Rio Grande Camp Knife" by William Jackson & Co. This imposing Victorian-era Sheffield Bowie knife is a significant example of the high-quality knives exported by British makers during the mid-to-late 19th century. The broad steel blade, featuring a classic spear-point profile with a subtle swedge, is clearly stamped on the obverse with the model name "RIO GRANDE CAMP KNIFE" and on the ricasso with the prestigious manufacturer's mark "WM JACKSON & CO, SHEAF ISLAND WORKS, SHEFFIELD." William Jackson & Co were prominent cutlery manufacturers operating from the renowned Sheaf Island Works, catering to a global market with a particular emphasis on robust frontier tools for the American and colonial trade. The hilt is expertly constructed with natural stag horn scales, handsomely secured by brass pins, and is fitted with a polished oval crossguard. The knife is preserved in its original hand-stitched tan leather scabbard, which is elegantly decorated with stamped scrollwork borders and a central motif of oak leaves and an acorn. Measuring approximately 41 cm in total length, this substantial "Rio Grande" Bowie knife represents the magnificent example of Sheffield's industrial craftsmanship in the Victorian era's. The item is in good condition.
