Description

A Rare Pre-Columbian Bronze Figural Axe Head, Late 1st Millennium B.C.. This rare and artistically significant Pre-Columbian artifact, dating to the late 1st millennium B.C., represents the sophisticated metallurgical traditions of the ancient Andean cultures of South America. The axe head is cast from solid bronze and features a robust, rectangular blade that flares slightly toward the cutting edge. The most striking feature is the figural decoration on the socket, which is masterfully sculpted into a stylized human face. This face exhibits classic regional iconographic characteristics, including large circular eyes, a prominent nose, and stylized protruding ears. The entire piece is enveloped in a deep, authentic natural verdigris patina with areas of earthy mineralization, serving as a testament to its ancient origin. The artifact measures approximately 11 cm in length with a blade height of 5.5 cm. This axe head is an exceptional example of the fusion of early South American bronze-working and ritualistic artistic expression. The item is in good condition.
