Description
A Rare Italian Renaissance Embossed Leather Box with the Medici Coat of Arms, 16th Century. This rare and exquisite Italian Renaissance casket, dating to the 16th century, serves as a remarkable testament to the sophisticated cuir bouilli craftsmanship of the Florentine workshops. The square box is made of wood covered with molded leather, featuring a lid centrally embossed with the heraldic device of the illustrious Medici family, displaying the six palle within a beaded oval shield. This armorial center is surrounded by an intricate composition of symmetrical foliate scrollwork and volutes, accented by a coronet above and a classical grotesque mask at the lower terminal. The sides of the box are meticulously decorated with a continuous frieze of repeating floral rosettes and punched stippled backgrounds, characteristic of high-status luxury goods from the period. The interior is lined with a vintage green ribbed textile, likely intended to safeguard small valuables or personal correspondence (The interior was probably restored at a later period). The box measures approximately 8 x 8 x 4,5 cm.. The item is in good condition.
