Description
A Rare German Cavalry War Hammer (Reiterhammer), 16th-17th Century. This impressive German cavalry war hammer, known as a Reiterhammer, dating to the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century, represents a specialized sidearm developed to penetrate the sophisticated plate armor of the period. The forged steel head is comprised of a square, multi-faceted hammer face and a long, gracefully tapering downward-curving fluke, or beak, engineered for both concussive force and piercing capability. The steel shaft is accented with elegant baluster-turned moldings and transitions into a square socket meticulously engraved with a crowned heraldic shield. Adjacent to this heraldry, the socket bears distinct maker's marks, including a punch in the form of a walking cockerel and a rectangular cartouche containing the initials "SVL". The handle is fitted with a textured, age-darkened leather-covered grip, further accented by decorative braided silver wire collars at the pommel and terminal. Measuring approximately 59 cm in total length, this weapon is an exceptional example of the functional artistry found in Central European military craftsmanship. The item is in good condition.
