Description
A Rare French Flintlock Blunderbuss by Baudier, Late 18th Century. This fine late 18th-century French flintlock blunderbuss is a superior example of European firearms craftsmanship, featuring a lock plate elegantly engraved with the maker's name, "Baudier," set amidst scrolling foliate borders. The steel barrel transitions from an octagonal breech to a rounded profile, separated by a decorative raised girdle with acanthus leaf engraving, and culminates in a distinctive flared "tromblon" muzzle designed for wide shot dispersal at close range. Manufacturer's marks at the top of the barrel in the breech. The firearm is mounted on a beautifully figured walnut full-stock, characterized by a raised cheekpiece and polished steel furniture, including a contoured side-plate, trigger guard, and butt-plate. A steel ramrod is retained by integrated pipes along the underside of the forestock. Historically, such blunderbusses were the preferred weapons for naval boarding actions and the defense of mail coaches due to their formidable short-range capabilities. The total length of the piece measures approximately 90 cm. The item is in Excellent condition.
