This rare and sophisticated French small sword, produced between 1750 and 1780, exemplifies the opulent aesthetic of late 18th-century European court culture. The weapon features a robust steel blade of triangular section, which is exquisitely decorated with blued and gilded engraving. Its hilt is masterfully chiselled in both high and low relief, showcasing a dense composition of military trophies and neoclassical scrollwork set against a sumptuous gold-plated ground. The hilt assembly is completed by a wooden grip, finely bound in a spiral with copper wire and silver ribbon to enhance both its visual splendor. As a highly ornate example of a civilian sidearm, the piece represents the meticulous metalworking techniques prevalent during the French Enlightenment.
