Description
A Rare and Exceptionally Ornate French Gilt Small Sword with Scabbard, circa 1750-1780. This rare and richly decorated French small sword, dating from approximately 1750 to 1780, is an exquisite example of 18th-century courtly craftsmanship. The weapon features a long, triangular steel blade that is finely decorated with engraving and gilding. The hilt is masterfully executed in steel, chiselled in both high and low relief to showcase a sophisticated arrangement of classical scrollwork interspersed with elaborate military trophies, including detailed representations of weapons and armor. The grip is composed of a wooden core wrapped in a decorative spiral of silver wire and ribbon. Notably, this sword retains a portion of its original leather scabbard, a rare occurrence for sets of this age. The upper steel fitting of the scabbard are decorated in the same ornate style as the hilt to provide a unified aesthetic. While the lower portion of the scabbard is lost and there is visible damage to the remaining leather sections, the set remains a significant survival of French decorative arts. The sword measures approximately 100 cm in total length. The item is in good condition, with scabbard damage as noted.
