Description
A Rare American Civil War Savage Revolving Fire-Arms Co. Navy Model Revolver. This significant American Civil War-era Savage Revolving Fire-Arms Co. Navy Model revolver, produced in Middletown, Connecticut, circa 1861–1862, is a remarkable example of mid-19th-century firearms innovation. Known to collectors for its unique "figure-eight" trigger guard, the design utilizes a dual-lever system where the large lower ring acts as a cocking lever to index the six-shot cylinder and set the hammer, while the upper curved trigger discharges the weapon. This mechanical arrangement also drives the cylinder forward against the breech of the barrel to create a more efficient gas seal upon firing. The revolver features a 15.5 cm. octagonal 9.2 mm. caliber steel barrel fitted with a dovetailed brass front blade sight and a rear sight notch located on the frame beneath the hammer. The top strap is distinctly stamped with the manufacture and patent information: "SAVAGE R.F.A. CO. MIDDLETOWN, CT / H.S. NORTH PATENTED JUNE 17 1856 / JANUARY 18 1859 MAY 15 1860." Walnut wooden handles are included. The total length is approximately 38 cm. A very rare artifact of North American military history. The item is in good condition.
