Description
A North African White Metal-Mounted Dagger (Koummya), 19th Century. This 19th-century Koummya serves as a refined example of traditional Berber craftsmanship from the North African Maghreb. The dagger features a characteristic curved steel blade struck with a distinct circular hallmark. Its hilt and scabbard are expertly encased in white metal mounts, which are profusely decorated with hand-engraved floral motifs and geometric interlacing patterns typical of regional artisanal production. The grip is fashioned from a dark, carved material, likely horn or hardwood, providing a stark contrast to the etched metal pommel and guard. The scabbard terminates in an elegant, sweeping 'U' shape and retains a braided blue textile suspension cord attached to two ornate suspension rings. Measuring approximately 38 cm in total length, this Koummya illustrates the dual role of such objects as both functional sidearms and prestigious ceremonial status symbols. The item is in good condition.
