Description

A Magnificent Pair of Flintlock Musketoons, Spain, Catalonia, Second of the 17th Century. A superb and exceptionally well-preserved pair of short flintlock musketoons, masterfully crafted in Catalonia, circa 1650–1680. Each musketoon exhibits a striking combination of artistry and martial elegance typical of the finest Spain gunmaking centers of the late 17th century. The octagonal-to-round barrels are finely engraved and have a gunsmith's mark near the breech. The lock plates are delicately engraved. The walnut full stocks are richly decorated with scrolling silver inlay of Baroque design, terminating in silver butt caps and mounts, with ornamental escutcheons and matching ramrods. The overall design harmoniously combines functional strength with intricate embellishment, representing the Spain mastery of combining fine metalwork and wood carving in early firearms production. These musketoons are rare surviving examples of firearms. Their lavish decoration, precision mechanism, and matching form make them a highly desirable addition to any advanced collection of European arms. Condition: Excellent for the period, showing a deep aged patina, minor wear to metal and wood consistent with age, original parts intact. Caliber: approx. 22 mm. Length: approx. 43 cm each.
