Description

A Magnificent Cased Pair of Side-by-Side Percussion Pistols by Sebastian Alberdi, Eibar, Dated 1849. This rare and exceptional cased pair of mid-19th-century side-by-side percussion pistols represents the pinnacle of Basque gunmaking, produced by the renowned master Sebastian Alberdi in the historic firearms hub of Eibar. The pistols feature heavy side-by-side barrels that retain their superb original blued finish, each meticulously inscribed along the top rib with silver inlay, "De Herraduras – Por Sebastian Alberdi – En Eibar – Año de 1849," indicating they were forged from "hierro de herraduras" (horseshoe iron), a material traditionally prized for its superior strength and resilience. The lock plates, hammers, and tangs are exquisitely decorated with dense foliate scrollwork and floral engravings, reflecting the sophisticated aesthetic of the period. The finely figured walnut stocks are sculpted with ergonomic grips featuring crisp hand-cut checkering and are enriched with silver-mounted furniture, including engraved trigger guards and distinctive shell-form pommel caps. The set is presented in its original fitted mahogany case, lined with deep velvet and containing a suite of accessories including a decorative brass powder flask, ramrod, and loading tools. The pistols measure 28 cm in length, while the presentation case has a width of 39 cm. The item is in Excellent condition.
