Description
A Important 18th-19th C. Greek or Hungarian Sword with Silver Filigree, Gilding, and Colored Stones. This exceptional Greek sabre, dating from the late 18th to the early 19th century, represents a significant example of high-status decorative weaponry within the Balkan and Hellenic cultural spheres. The hilt features a curved grip expertly bound in tight silver wire, culminating in a distinctive pommel executed in intricate silver-gilt filigree and granulation, further adorned with vibrant red insets. The matching crossguard displays symmetrical quillons with central stones, harmonizing with the luxurious ornamentation of the scabbard's leather-covered wooden frame. The scabbard is encased in elaborate silver mounts including a locket, a central mid-band, and a long chape, each showcasing masterful filigree work, selective gilding, and a profusion of inset colored glass or semi-precious stones. These mounts are connected by embossed and engraved silver borders featuring delicate foliate and scrolled motifs, housing a curved steel blade, with one wide fuller on each side. Reaching a total length of 89 cm. The item is in excellent condition.
