Description

A Hungarian Royal River Guard Officer's Dirk with Etched and Gilded Blade, Early 20th Century. This rare Hungarian officer’s dirk of the Royal River Guard (Magyar Kiralyi Folyamerok) dates to the early 20th century and serves as a distinguished example of Central European regalia. The slender steel blade is elaborately decorated on both faces with etched foliate scrolls surrounding the Hungarian coat of arms superimposed over an anchor, further enhanced by central gilded highlights. The crossguard is cast with a central scallop shell and terminates in recurved sea-monster quillons, leading to a ribbed white celluloid grip wrapped with twisted wire and capped by a pommel fashioned as a coiled rope knot. Its coordinating white metal scabbard features a finely pebbled "sharkskin" texture, embellished with chased depictions of Neptune brandishing a trident and a anchor, complete with two suspension rings. Measuring approximately 42 centimeters in total length, this dirk reflects the prestige of the Hungarian riverine forces during the interwar period and exhibits the high-quality craftsmanship typical of military presentation weapons. The item is in good condition.
