Description

A German High-Relief Carved Bone? Hunting Horn with Dog's Head Terminal, 18th Century. This impressive German bone hunting horn, dating from the eighteenth to nineteenth century, is expertly carved in high relief with a dynamic, continuous spiral narrative that wraps around its tapering form. The decoration depicts a spirited hunting scene set within a stylized forest landscape, featuring a hunter in period costume accompanied by an array of beasts, including a bridled horse, leaping hounds, and various woodland prey, all rendered with exceptional anatomical precision and depth. The horn gracefully tapers and terminates in a masterfully sculpted hound's head with prominent eyes and a textured coat, while the bell end is finished with intricate geometric and foliate borders. Fitted with two integral suspension loops for traditional carriage, the piece exhibits a warm, age-softened patina that enhances the intricate details of the figurative carving and reflects the rich hunting heritage of Central Europe. Measuring 55cm in length, the horn represents a sophisticated marriage of functional sporting equipment and fine sculptural artistry. The item is in good condition. CITES on request.
