Description

A French Naval Officer's Bicorn Hat and Original Presentation Case, Gautier, Toulon, 1895. This exquisite late 19th-century French naval officer's bicorn hat, represents an example of maritime ceremonial attire, preserved notably in its original custom-fitted presentation case. The hat itself, constructed from fine black felt, is adorned with elaborate gold bullion agraffe and wire coiled tassels, with a gilded brass button featuring the fouled anchor motif characteristic of the French Navy. The exterior form demonstrates the elegant curvature and rigid structure required for formal naval dress during the Third Republic. The interior retains its original cream silk lining and leather sweatband, prominently featuring the gilded maker's mark of "H. Gautier, 5 & 7 Rue de l'Arsenal, Toulon," a prestigious military outfitter located at the heart of France's historic naval port. The accompanying wooden chest is crafted from polished mahogany with brass carry handle and a secure latch mechanism, serving both as a functional protective vessel and a display piece. The exterior of the case is fitted with an engraved brass identification plaque reading "Gautier 1895 Toulon," which provides an exact date of commission and provenance for this historically significant set. Measuring approximately 50 centimeters in length to accommodate the wide span of the bicorn, this assembly stands as a rare and complete artifact of European naval history. The item is in good condition.
