Description

A French Model 1916 "Coupe-Coupe" Machete for Senegalese Tirailleurs, Circa 1930. This French Model 1916 "Coupe-Coupe" machete is a significant example of the specialized military equipment issued to the Tirailleurs Sénégalais (Senegalese Colonial Troops) during the first half of the 20th century. Originally based on an 1898 design, this pattern saw extensive service through both World Wars and remained a staple tool for colonial infantry during the Indochina Wars and into the 1960s. The heavy steel blade is characterized by its broad, cleaver-like profile and slightly curved edge, engineered for both entrenching and jungle clearing. The hilt is composed of two robust wooden grip scales secured by three prominent brass rivets, featuring a contoured pommel to ensure a secure grip during use. Struck near the base of the blade is a small crescent-shaped inspector's mark, typical of the production variations found in the 1930s. The weapon is accompanied by its original heavy-duty brown leather scabbard, which displays reinforced stitching, a functional top securing flap, and a integrated belt loop for field carriage. The overall length of the machete measures approximately 54 cm. The item is in good condition.
