Description
A French Model 1874 "Gras" Bayonet by L Deny, Paris, Dated 1881. This French Model 1874 bayonet, popularly known as the "Gras" after the standard-issue rifle for which it was developed. The weapon is distinguished by its T-section blade forged from tempered steel, a specialized design engineered to provide exceptional structural rigidity for thrusting maneuvers. The hilt assembly is comprised of an ergonomic wooden grip secured to the tang with steel rivets and a polished brass pommel shaped in the classic military beak style. A robust steel crossguard includes a muzzle ring and a forward-swept hooked quillon, which served a defensive guard. Expertly engraved along the spine of the blade in flowing cursive script is the inscription of the Parisian contractor and the date of manufacture, "L. Deny Paris 1881," denoting its production at a private factory in the capital. The quillon is further struck with the serial identifier "JJ 21413". Measuring a total length of approximately 65 cm, this piece stands as a fine example of the precision and functional elegance of the French Third Republic's military equipment. The item is in good condition.
