Description

A Fine Silver-Mounted Malayan Short Sword Parang with Carved Horn Hilt, 19th Century. This distinguished Malayan short sword, or parang, serves as a superior example of traditional craftsmanship from the Malay Archipelago during the 19th century. The hilt is masterfully carved from dark horn into a stylized mythical animal-head, a prestigious motif synonymous with high status, and is joined to the blade by silver bolsters that exhibit clear hallmarks, including a lion passant and characteristic date letters. The single-edged steel blade features an intricate pattern-welded surface, achieved through traditional multi-layered forging techniques to produce a high-contrast Damascus finish. The accompanying scabbard is entirely encased in high-grade silver and is meticulously decorated with dense foliate repoussé and chased floral motifs throughout its entire length, showing the regional preference for opulent martial ornamentation. Representing a sophisticated synthesis of functional weaponry and decorative art, the parang measures approximately 65 cm in total length and remains a significant artifact of the military history and artistic traditions of the region. The item is in good condition.
