Description

A Fine North African Koummya Dagger with Inset stones, 19th Century. This 19th-century Koummya represents a refined example of the traditional curved dagger favored across North Africa, specifically within the artisan traditions of Morocco. The steel blade exhibits a characteristic sweeping curve and is struck with a distinct maker's mark at the forte, depicting a stylized stellar motif flanked by two crescents. The hilt is masterfully carved from horn and terminates in a prominent fan-shaped pommel, a silhouette deeply rooted in regional martial heritage. Both the collar and pommel are adorned with white metal mounts, meticulously set with a series of colorful inset glass pastes or stones in vibrant red and turquoise tones. The pommel is further embellished with a silver plate featuring a finely worked star and decorative crescent accent. The dagger is housed in its original leather-covered scabbard, which shows hand-stitched construction and subtle incised geometric patterns. Measuring approximately 45 cm in total length, this specimen illustrates the sophisticated fusion of North African decorative arts and functional weapon design typical of late 19th-century artifacts. The item is in good condition.
