Description
A Fine French Parcel-Gilt and Chiselled Steel Small Sword, circa 1750-1780. This rare and exceptionally ornate French small sword, dating from approximately 1750 to 1780, represents the pinnacle of gentlemanly swords during the mid-to-late 18th century. The weapon features a tapered triangular steel blade designed for both lightness. The hilt is masterfully executed in steel, chiselled in high and low relief to depict a sophisticated arrangement of classical scrollwork interspersed with elaborate military trophies, including flags and armor. A luxurious aesthetic is achieved through the extensive gold plating applied to the recessed backgrounds of the shell guard, pommel, and knuckle-bow, which serves to emphasize the intricate sculptural details. The grip is meticulously wrapped in a spiral of fine silver wire over a wooden core, providing a textured and decorative finish characteristic of high-status European commissions of the period. Measuring 88 cm in total length, this piece exemplifies the refined metalwork and parcel-gilding techniques favored by elite French armories during the transition from the Rococo to the Neoclassical style. The item is in good condition.
