Description
A Fine French Model 1860 Naval Administration Dagger by Coulaux & Cie, Klingenthal, Second Empire. This rare French Model 1860 Naval Administration dagger, often designated for the "Administration de la Marine" or "Commis de la Marine," is a distinguished example of Second Empire maritime regalia. Produced at the historic Klingenthal manufactory, the weapon features a slender, straight steel blade with a diamond-section profile and narrow decorative fullers, bearing the crisp stamped signatures of both "Klingenthal" and the private manufacturing firm "Coulaux & Cie" on the ricasso. The hilt is an exercise in mid-19th-century elegance, featuring a deeply fluted black ebony grip that provides a sophisticated contrast to the polished brass hilt components. The brass hardware includes a globular pommel and a characteristic crossguard with gracefully scrolled terminals. The dagger is housed in its original black leather scabbard, which retains its formal brass locket with a functional suspension stud and a matching brass chape. Measuring approximately 52 cm in total length, this piece represents a highly specific category of French naval sidearms, reflecting the status and uniform regulations of maritime civil servants and administrators during the reign of Napoleon III. The item is in good condition.
