Description

A Fine 19th-Century Spanish Toledo Left-Handed Parrying Dagger in 17th-Century Style. This exceptional nineteenth-century Spanish Left-Handed parrying dagger, is a masterful example of Historicist metalwork produced in the prestigious armory center of Toledo in the seventeenth-century Baroque style. The hilt is centered around a characteristic triangular sail guard, intricately decorated with etched scrolling foliage and a central cartouche bearing the name "TOLEDO" in stylized script. The architecture of the hilt is completed by long, straight quillons with knurled terminals and a matching etched pommel, all exhibiting the high level of craftsmanship Spanish blades. The straight steel blade is particularly notable for its serrated and a ricasso clearly inscribed "TOLEDO," further enhanced by gilded lavish panels and etching that depicts dense floral and vine motifs along the length of the blade. The dagger is accompanied by its original steel scabbard, which mirrors the ornate decorative program of the hilt with continuous etched foliate patterns and a teardrop-shaped suspension stud. Measuring 42 cm in total length, this piece exemplifies the romantic nineteenth-century fascination with Renaissance military heritage and the enduring skill of the Toledo smiths. The item is in good condition.
