Description
A Fine 19th Century Japanese Tanto in Intricately Carved Narrative Bone Mountings. This 19th-century Japanese tanto, features a single-edged steel blade mounted within an intricately carved bone scabbard and hilt. The bone mountings are meticulously decorated with narrative scenes depicting figures in traditional attire, set against stylized landscapes and floral patterns, with dark pigment applied to accentuate the fine incised lines. Reflecting the artistic tastes of the late Edo to early Meiji periods, these decorative weapons were often intended for ceremonial use or produced for the sophisticated export market, showcasing the virtuosic skill of Japanese bone carvers. The scabbard is fitted with a small metal suspension ring, while the hilt remains largely undecorated to provide a visual balance to the highly ornamental scabbard. The total length of the piece, as measured from the pommel to the end of the scabbard, is approximately 46 cm. The item is in good condition.
